EL ABRAZO CUMBIERO

by Andrés Drimer

Emerging Cumbia for everyone

El Abrazo Cumbiero was born in 2014 as a collective of artists focused on independent culture in music, design, and management, with the main objective of highlighting and strengthening the scene of Emerging Cumbia. It's a new perspective on tropical music that puts value on tolerance, inclusion, and respect without forgetting its sensual, picaresque, and celebratory character that defines it. The original idea and coordination of the project are in charge of producers Andrés Drimer and Lautaro Furman. During its journey, El Abrazo Cumbiero celebrated over 150 performances, through which many representative artists of the scene and almost all emerging bands in the circuit have passed. El Abrazo has obtained three times the distinction of Ibermúsicas, allowing for projects of exchange with notable artists from other corners of Iberoamerica, in the form of audiovisual productions and artistic tours.

WHAT IS EMERGING CUMBIA?

The Emerging Cumbia movement brings new ways of understanding the tradition of tropical music: it celebrates the richness in composition and musical nuances, distinguishes original and contemporary interpretations, highlights values such as respect and diversity, and at the same time, gives value to a strong-rooted cumbier and popular tradition. Emerging Cumbia emerges from the hands of a vanguard of young orchestras that reinterpret tropical music, taking as a base classic sounds such as Colombian and also reclaiming Argentine cumbia formations from the 1960s -like Wawancó and Cuarteto Imperial-, without losing sight of new expressions and styles of Cumbia. While some proposals follow a more traditional line, others fuse with other musical genres such as rock, jazz, hip-hop, among others. However, all share a desire to connect with root cumbia while adding their own signature.
